Barbie I Can Be the Voice: Inspiring Our Daughters

My role as a mother doubled when my bundle of joy came out a girl. Not only am I a mom to this sweet child, but I am also her first female role model, her first look at women’s roles in society and her first guide to navigating through this world as a girl.

This is a big responsibility, because let’s face it, I’m not perfect. Thankfully I don’t have to be. Teaching my daughter to learn from her mistakes, gain strength from her accomplishments and pursue her dreams are just a few of the ways that I can guide her to being the best she can be.

I think about my influences growing up as a girl and of course my mom comes to mind. I’m not sure how she did it because I guess I’ve never explicitly asked, but I do know that I turned out to be a confident, well-rounded and independent woman who doesn’t always  take no for an answer. And I know I have my mom to thank for this.

With my daughter, I try to show her that women can do anything. She’s seen me take on some nerve-racking feats, like going to the mayor’s office for an interview for a blog post or getting ready for a feature photo shoot. She watches me play soccer every Sunday during the summer and floor hockey in the fall. She knows there are no limits just because we’re girls.

She watches me do my makeup and shares that she wants to be as pretty as me. To this I reply that she is already beautiful and that make up only changes the way you look; it doesn’t make you prettier.

With every choice I make and every action I do, I’m thinking about my daughter and how it translates to her. This is a big job we have; mothers of daughters but with some thought and guidance we can teach our daughters to be all that they can be.

Celebrating and encouraging women is something that has always been close to my heart. It’s not that we’re better than men or that we have more to celebrate, it’s that we’re still working diligently at solidifying the message our sisters of the past worked so hard to send. We are women, hear us roar!

I Can Be The Voice is a new campaign and website that will help Moms with the task of raising their daughters so that they are smarter, stronger, happier, and more fulfilled.  Canadian Parenting Coach, Terry Carson will provide perspectives, wisdom, and experiences with visitors who, like us all, want to become better at parenting.

Think girl empowerment, encouragement for young girls to be their own best advocates and helping your daughter to realize the scope of her inner potential. This is what you’ll find at I Can Be The Voice.

Join other moms with daughters share your voice and speak your mind. It’s said that every time you find your own voice, you help a girl find hers. Visit the Barbie I Can Be website to get involved.

Tomorrow (October 27)  will be I Can Be Day, where select Canadian schools will get involved by having in-class curriculum encouraging young girls to think and learn about their future career aspirations. Also, some of Canada’s most inspirational women will demonstrate how today’s girls can dream and achieve anything they want to be. What an amazing and fantastic initiative.

Who was your role model or inspiration growing up? How do you encourage your daughter?

Disclosure – I am participating in the Barbie I Can Be campaign by Mom Central Canada on behalf of Mattel Canada.  I received compensation as a thank you for my participation.  The opinions on this blog are my own.

Life Choices Natural Foods – Giveaway

Life Choices Natural Foods

If you’re a regular City Mom reader you’ll know that I am more concerned about the food my family and I eat than ever. After completing my recent Detox program and continuing on the path of clean eating, I am extra observant of the ingredients in the foods I buy for my family.

That is why I am proud to share the details of a Canadian company called Life Choices Natural Foods with you today. And I’m excited to be able to offer a giveaway that will allow one lucky reader to win a Life Choices Natural Foods gift pack valued at $25.00.

Life Choices Natural Foods is a natural health foods company based in Toronto with a mission of: Making the Right Choices Easy. All of their products are not only natural, but also kid-friendly! They provide Canadian families with healthy versions of the foods they want to eat, such as Pizza, Mac & Cheese, Meatballs, Chicken Fingers and even Pierogies.

Sometimes making the switch from processed foods to healthy foods can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to our kids. They know what they like and they won’t accept anything less. This can make meal time difficult.

Life Choices Natural Foods has gone about making family meals healthier the right way. You can still choose from your kids favourite foods but you don’t have to compromise on health and quality.

Life Choices Natural Foods

I was able to try out one of their products to test on my family and it was a huge success. Little S is a big fan of chicken nuggets (what child isn’t?) so I chose the vegetable grain fed, raised without antibiotics Chicken Nuggets and they were a big hit. Their custom-made multigrain coating is made with flax, whole grains and oats and provides a good source of Omega-3 and fibre.

Check out the ingredients list: Chicken, Water, Textured Soya Protein, Soya Protein Isolate, Salt, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Spices. In a Coating of Whole Wheat Flour, Toasted Wheat Crumbs with Multigrain Blend (Wheat, Rye, Triticale, Barley, Yellow Corn, Millet, Soy and Flaxseed), Spices, Flaxmeal, Rolled Oats, High Monounsaturated Sunflower Seed Oil, Water, Canola Oil, Yellow Corn Flour, Corn Starch, Wheat Flour, Salt, Guar Gum

And check out the key concepts of this product: Source of Omega-3 from Flax – No Trans Fats – Prepared without frying – No Additives or Preservatives – Source of Fibre and Iron.

With healthy eating you need to read all packaging and labels on the products you buy. The rule of thumb is if you can’t pronounce it or don’t know what it is you should put that product down. If you are unsure of a particular ingredient, do your research before buying.

I felt at peace knowing the ingredients in Life Choices Natural Foods were not only natural but also provided nutritional benefits. Now when little S asks for some of her favourite foods, I have a trick up my sleeve. And with a wide variety of choices like All Beef Hotdogs and Chicken Burgers the meal options seem endless. And because there is no compromising on taste, no one notices that they are healthy…except me, and that is a good thing!

Sharing with the #LdnOnt Community – Seventh Gen’s Diaper Donation Program

Seventh Generation

Seventh Generation is aiming to reach their goal of giving away up to 240,000 diapers to 40 shelters in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. And guess what, we’re a lucky recipient here in London.

That’s because I am part of the Seventh Generation Diaper Donation Program so I get to donate 160 Seventh Gen, chlorine-free diapers to the charity of my choice. And because I live in London, they’re going to a special place in our community.

Rotholme Women’s & Family Shelter has always held a special place in my heart. I feel as a woman and as a mom that it’s very important to have a place for emergency accommodation in times of crisis for women and families specifically. I’m proud that London houses a safe place like this.

RWFS is a 41-bed facility that primarily accommodates families (two parent and single parent families, both male and female lead). Single women who have no other shelter options may also reside at RWFS. The length of stay varies from one day to several weeks. Twenty-four hour emergency admission is provided for families and single women age 16 and over, and who:

  • are homeless and in need of temporary emergency accommodation
  • are in crisis and require emergency shelter and care

Caseworkers and a Child and Youth Worker provide crisis counseling and assist clients to re-enter the community. Clients are referred to community agencies where they get help to plan an appropriate support system. Support service for clients with mental health or concurrent disorders are available through referral to the Community Mental Health Programs.

Right now RWFS is extremely busy. Currently, and for the past few weeks, 80 clients have been calling this place home. That’s 39 residents over the number of beds they have available so they’ve had to borrow cots from the Men’s Mission and other places to meet their growing needs.

You see, recently Rotholme opened their doors to men. This helps to keep families together and allows single dads to make use of their facilities as well.

Me & Kristy, Front-Line Staff at Rotholme Women's & Family Shelter

Kristy, a front-line staff member at Rothholme, asked me to communicate the need for donations from the London community. Especially at busy times like they’re experiencing now.

Kristy also wanted me to sincerely thank the London community for donations received to date. She said that London has really stepped up to help out, especially at busy times like Christmas.

“The babies here [at Rotholme Women’s & Family Shelter] get more presents under the tree than most children in shelters,” said Kristy.

This made me happy to hear and even more proud to be a Londoner.

Seventh Generation Earth Mother

During the month of October, every package of Seventh Generation diapers that you buy anywhere in Canada will mean one package is donated to a women’s shelter in a community. That means one mother will be able to offer her child the same safe & effective, chlorine-free diapers that you’re able to offer yours.

That is the power of Mothers Helping Mothers, and with your help, Seventh Generation will donate up to 240,000 diapers across Canada during this month. To view a list of all the participating women’s shelters, click here.

And don’t forget to stop by the Canadian Seventh Generation site to sign up for great money-saving offers. Right now you can save $1.00 on any Seventh Generation product and/or $2.00 on any Seventh Generation laundry product.

You can print each coupon twice and the page is often updated with new offers.

I would like to thank Seventh Generation and Mom Central Canada for allowing me to part of this wonderful program. I have to say it was the greatest feeling sharing these diapers with men and women in need.

Disclosure – I am participating in the Seventh Generation program by Mom Central Canada. I received compensation as a thank you for my participation. The opinions on this blog are my own.

DETOX Diaries: 22 Days & a Lifetime + a Dr.Sara DETOX Discount

  • Total weight loss = 9.2 lbs
  • Inches lost on waist = 1.5
  • Inches lost hips = 0.5
  • Waist to hip ratio = 0.76

So the end is here. 22 days, a wealth of knowledge and a new lease on life! The information below summarizes my experience with the Dr.Sara Detox program and shares information on a fabulous discount on the program.

Instead of telling you how my last week went (because it was really easy and therefore kind of boring) I’m going to get right to the good stuff, because after all, that’s what you want to know right? How easy/difficult was the program? How has it changed your life? And how can I sign up?

Here is my suumary of the Dr.Sara DETOX program:

  • Day 1 – Feels like a DETOX
  • Day 2 – 5 Feels like a diet
  • Day 6 – 22 Feels like a healthy way of living life

I can’t even begin to express how much this program has changed my life. Before the Cleanse I was in constant discomfort in my gut. I felt swollen, achy and bloated. I was tired all the time and suffered from dull headaches most days of the week.

Now I have way more energy and feel at peace on the inside. But believe it or not that’s not what I’m most excited about.

I was dealing with some serious food issues. I was constantly battling myself when it came to food. I tried to eat well but I usually ended up giving into the cravings at some point throughout the week. I tried fad diets, calorie counting and regulated programs like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. But nothing seemed to work or stick. It was still a constant argument in my head.

Clean eating is an in-depth topic, and I couldn’t begin to cover all I’ve learned in one post. But the knowledge I have gained in the last 22 days has truly changed my outlook on food and my view on me. I am worth taking care of my body and I am worth fixing my relationship with food. With clean eating (which is the result of the Dr.Sara DETOX program) I can maintain a healthy balance between enjoying the eating experience and looking out for my health and well being. And once a week I still get to indulge on some not-so-good foods.

On Thursday I attended the last group meeting for the program and I was surprised to find myself feeling quite emotional. There is a huge aspect of the program that has to do with one’s feelings. For me I hadn’t taken the time to recognize that part fully, but when it came time to say goodbye to Dr.Sara, all the feelings came out.

I have been turning to food for a long time for comfort and as a stress reliever. But with the guidance and education from Dr.Sara, I feel like I’ve changed that permanently.

Everyone has different reasons for participating in a DETOX program. Some want to lose weight and others want to give their system a break. Others are interested in cleaning out their bodies of the toxins they’ve overweighed their bodies with.

Whatever your reason for interest in a program like this, I highly recommend trying out the Dr.Sara DETOX program. You won’t go hungry and you won’t be stuck drinking only liquids for 22 days or other controversial methods that exist.

You’ll gain a tremendous amount of education and you’ll feel great. You’ll likely also take something away that is unique to you. It’s different for everyone. It’s not hard! It’s harmonious and life affirming.

I am super excited to share the awesome discount Dr.Sara has set up for City Mom readers. If you’ve ever wanted to try a DETOX now is the time and you have two excellent options.

The City Mom DETOX Special

I recommend this option for those who are curious about the Cleanse and are interested in learning more. It’s a good chance to try it out for a low-cost. You’re also free to do this program on your own timeline. Start anytime before Dec. 31.

Dr.Sara is offering the in person DETOX program that takes place at Life With Baby, at a $75 discount. This program usually costs $199 but you can sign up today for $124.
