2012Fleming Drive is just one street in London {#LdnOnt}
PLEASE NOTE THERE IS FOUL LANGUAGE IN SOME OF THE IMAGES AND VIDEOS
We’re a small city of under 400,000 residents, yet national and international news stations were focused on London, Ontario this weekend.
It’s not because we did something heroic like discovered a cure for cancer or achieved greatness in the world of sports. Sadly we made headlines because we were home to the Fleming Riot. This is not something we are proud of. Nor is it something we wish to be associated with.
News coverage of the devastating events that took place on St. Patrick’s Day coined the Fleming Riot (after the name of the street where the chaos took place) is aplenty so I won’t bother recapping in this post. You can get caught up here and here.
I do want to focus on the reputation that this event has given to London. The number of suspects involved in the rioting is estimated to be from 700 offenders to a couple of thousand. Guess what, that’s only 0.25% of our population. And chances are that most of the accused are not natives of London but students from different cities that attend Fanshawe College.
WE MADE GLOBAL NEWS BUT FOR THE WRONG REASONS
Now Londoners are angry and want to see justice served. The #LdnOnt hashtag on Twitter was ablaze on Sunday with many tweeters speculating on what the outcome should be for those involved in the disturbance. With over $100,000 estimated in damages and our reputation dragged through the mud, it’s evident that we want to see redemption.
From a petition on Change.org put in place to suggest that the guilty Fanshawe rioters should be expelled to a Facebook group set up to help identify the participants through video footage and photos, London is coming together to try to right this wrong.
With the use of social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, it’s easier than ever to identify those involved in criminal activity like the Fleming Riot. Facebook users are being urged to update their status to display the following:
Fanshawe students that care; show the city of London (and the world) how great you really are. Help undo what your colleagues have so harmfully done. Head over to Fleming Drive tomorrow with garbage bags, shovels and whatever else you can think of-and pitch in. Help clean up the area and restore Fanshawe’s great reputation. You, and London, deserve it.
And ‘friends’ of the accused and sharing screen captures of those who are silly enough to share their involvement in the riot on Facebook & Twitter. See images below. Note that last names have been removed.
NOT GOOD TO BE A FANSHAWE GRAD
Many current and past students are upset at the thought of the good Fanshawe name being tainted by the riots on Saturday. A campaign has been mentioned to ban the hiring of Fanshawe College graduates to send a message to the school. But who does that hurt? And what purpose does this serve? Again, the number of students involved is a small fraction in comparison to the overall number of enrolled students.
But what can be done to send a message to students that this behaviour will not be tolerated? And what can we do to show all those with eyes on London that Fleming Drive is just ONE street in London? That we are in fact a great city with a strong culture and good people and good families?
THE CHILDREN OF THE FUTURE
If you visit the open Facebook Group, Fleming Riots St. Pat’s Day 2012 and scroll through the disturbing images, it becomes clear that there is a serious problem with some of today’s youth. Not only was their behaviour ridiculous and unspeakable, but by viewing their tweets and FB updates it’s obvious that there is no remorse but pride and boastfulness instead.
How can we be sure our own children won’t turn out this way and even more upsetting, how can we protect our children from people like this?
If you have any information on the Fleming Riot or recognize anyone from the videos or photos, please contact the London Police.

This saddens me and as a mom to a future Fanshawe studentit embarrasses me

I hear ya! I think that Fanshawe’s reputation will recover from this and faster than we think. I have heard some great things about how they are handling it, and as an alumni, I have seen first hand how they are reaching out to it’s past and present students.
Sometimes it’s more about how you overcome negativity! I think it’ll be okay!
Pam
Very sad. I went to Fanshawe right out of high school and did not attend a single party or riot. I went to learn a skill and that is what I did. When I wasn’t in class, I was working at one of my two jobs.
admin
Me too Pam. I had some get togethers that could be considered parties with friends from my class but nothing like this. It just didn’t happen back then.

This is very sad. I have the same worry as you, will our children become just like these hooligans? And what is wrong with the people who do things like this? Don’t they know the different between right and wrong?

Honestly I don’t know. I think mob mentality has a lot to do with it and perhaps some mental issues. But it’s such a complicated topic because I know personally I would have never done anything like this back in college. I feared the police and the law and I was raised better.

Kelly, I hadn’t seen this. This makes me sick. Just disgusting behaviour from what is suppose to be adults. these kids are graduating from College in the next few months, year??? really??? I can’t imagine how terrified those neighbours must have been. I hope through all those videos taken and bragging morons on twitter and facebook that most of them are identified. I’m a Fanshawe grad. so sad.

I know Jenn! So upsetting huh?
It is so hard to believe that some of these individuals are going to be ‘adults’ in a month or two. That we’ll be competing for jobs with them and having them contribute to our society. It’s awful!
Pete
Sorry, but if I were an employer I would think seriously before I’d hire a Fanshaw student from this year….I think the alcohol just brings out the true personality….these kids have ruined it for all Fanshaw students
admin
That is really too bad that you think that Pete. It’s a generalization and that is never a good thing.
Think of those graduates that were at home studying on St. Patrick’s day or hanging out with their friends quietly, working hard the last month or so before graduation. Do you really think that they should be penalized?
Surely after some thought on that you would change your mind?

Just disgusting……I’m so sorry this happened in your community

Thanks Julie! It’s upset us all here in London.

There is so much that is disgusting with this story that I really don’t have much to say at all. To the kid who put his FB status as an admission of everything he’d done, I hope he gets double the penalty for being double the dumb ass.
As for the city of London, I don’t this reflects as poorly on the city as it does on the school and the past and current members of Fanshawe. Look at the Vancouver riots, I can’t say that I blamed the entire city of Vancouver for them so I think the city of London will recover quickly from this.
Stupid kids.
admin
Double the dumbass is right! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on London. I think it will take us a while to get over it but you’re right that our reputation will recover faster than we think. This morning in Tim Hortons, on the street etc. was all everyone was talking about.
Lindsay
Wow. I have SO much to say on this, so I’ll try to keep it short. You’re SO right though that it seems as if students involved were proud, not remorseful! I have been hearing complaints more and more from older generations about our youth today, about how “entitled” they are, and I think that is exactly what has happened here. Our rules and laws have changed WAY too much in their favour, in my opinion, and it has helped to create a generation of entitled, spoiled brats that have no clue what hard work and tough love is all about. Obviously, this isn’t every single young person, but many seem to have those characteristics now, and this event is a prime example of that.
I heard someone on the radio today saying that “the punishment should fit the crime”, and with our Young Offenders Act, etc. now, the punishment hardly fits the crime for youth anymore, so much so, that older criminals are using youth to do their dirty work because of how lenient the youth laws are, the risk, if they do get caught, is so much less severe. The person on the radio today said that 120 years ago, a 17-year-old would be married with kids and working a farm by himself at that age, being young is no excuse, they are old enough to know right from wrong, and therefore should be treated equally.
Such a debate, but something clearly isn’t working well with many youth nowadays, so something needs to change!!
admin
You’re right it is such a tense debate. I still truly believe that there are more good than bad in this situation and the world in general. Again, take the percentage of those involved in comparrisson to Fanshawe’s current enrollement and you see it’s not so bad. Fanshawe is a good school in a good city.
What needs to change is parenting, education and support for families. This needs to start in the home from day one!
Shash
I totally agree Lindsay. they somehow feel entitled, like the world owes them something. They need a wake up call!

Wow, this is really sad. What’s even sadder is that these kids think it’s okay and cool that they were apart of this awful riot and felt proud enough to share it on their twitter and facebook.

And what makes it worse is fact that there is going to be little to no punishement. We’ll all be watching to see how it unfolds.

I was shocked when I heard about this on the news and watched some of the footage. THat’s HORRIBLE that these people acted like this and it looks very bad on them and their school. I feel bad for the innocent people living in that neighbourhood where it happened.

I agree Stacie. I can’t even imagine if I lived there and especially with a young child. I was picturing it in my mind and wondered what I’d do…would I jump in the car and get the heck out of there and risk being attacked in the car or stay in the house and risk being broken into an terrorized? So upsetting!

So sorry to hear this has happened!

Thanks Denise. It’s upsetting for sure.

This just sickens me. Seriously – what the hell is wrong with some people?!? It’s disgusting. There’s is nothing fun about wrong doings, vandalizing or destroying property. It’s scary that it’s coming to this.

See I was out of commission that night (had a few too many green beers) so I didn’t discover this all until the next morning. That would have been really upsetting following along and knowing it was happening but not being able to do anything about it

As someone who lives outside of Vancouver and was exposed to everything that happened surrounding the Stanley Cup riots for days, months and even still via the news, what I am shocked the most about this riot in London is that it seems that none of these people had a clue about just how much social media has been responsible/a tool for the arrests and charges that have taken place. People have been shamed, lost jobs, got kicked off national sports teams etc and all because they were outed through social media – the news, fb, twitter, videos etc! I am curious to see how the local police and investigators go about making arrests and charges in this case.

You’re so right Kristin.
As I mentioned in response to Shash’s comment too, I think it’s going to take a few more incidents like these two internationally focused events to have it become a full understanding that no crime goes unpunished now-a-days. If something good can come from what happened with both the riots I hope that this is it. That the message starts to sink in that you can’t get away with things like that anymore!
Shash
The same thing happened in Vancouver after the Canuck’s lost the Stanley Cup. Those caught on tape were charged. One student caught throwing a cocktail fire bomb thing into a police car had a full scholarship to a school in the US. It all got taken away from him. He got caught up in the frenzy and forgot about the consequences. “Mob-Mentality” they will wake up in a few weeks to regret it, in the meantime, may it serve as an example and reminder to the next generation – that this crap will not be tolerated!

Ya great point Shash. It’s going to take quite a few cases being cracked by the use of social media before it becomes ingrained in us that someone is always watching (or taping).

When I read this story the one thing I could think of was what if that was MY kid out there, What would I DO??? I can’t even imagine what the parents of these kids are going through right now!
admin
That’s a great perspective too! Everyone just assumes that the parents of these kids are at fault. Perhaps in some cases they are but there are lots of cases too where they aren’t. What they’re having to deal with now isn’t fair either!

My daughter will be finished her two year program at Fanshawe the end of April. She was very disappointed about what took place on St.Paddy’s Day, gave a bad wrap for all Fanshawe Students. Telling London businesses not to hire Fanshawe Grads, is hardly fair. Many of these students were not part of this incident and their are students out there who have been taught and live by good values. My daughter attends school full-time and works part-time in order to pay her rent and by her food. She does not work a great deal of hours due to her commitment to her program, however she does get by on her own without outside funding. I hope when she graduates, she will be considered for employment by a London business. Not all deserve to be punished because of a few bad apples!!
RANTWICK
I thought that was a pretty thoughtful and well written article… there are so many people writing and thinking about this event in a serious, proper way. Unfortunately I ended up on a bit of tangent when I tried to write about it…

You just can’t control the mind of the kids. What they want, they’d like to make it happen. And don’t even care if they could hurt others even their loved ones. This kids really needs attention and discipline.
