2012Confessions of City Mom {#HealthyFamilies}
This will be the first time that I let the following words flow out on-screen. Brace yourself for a confession so raw and impactful that it will knock your socks off…ready?
I sometimes long for a backyard!
I know, I know, how could City Mom say these words?
City Mom was developed and is based on an urban, high-rise lifestyle. It feels almost sacrilege to utter these words, but it’s true!
As Little S ages, she gains more independence and moves about at a greater rate. Not only that but we are slowly finding ourselves with a little more freedom as well. I sometimes fantasize about letting her loose in a backyard, grabbing a book and a hot coffee and sipping, relaxing and reading while she entertains herself or plays with the neighbourhood kids.
But that daydream comes to a screeching halt as soon as the fantasy is interrupted by the thought of raking leaves, shoveling a driveway, cleaning out gutters, mowning the lawn, pruning, washing windows and so on. We have come to appreciate the extra time our lifestyle affords us. We have very little to do in terms of house work and home maintenance.
I especially notice this in the summer months when I talk with or visit friends. They seem to spend a lot of time on the upkeep of their home and though they don’t seem to totally mind it, it’s still time spent on chores rather than time out having carefree fun.
This is how I know that we are living the lifestyle we are meant to live. Perhaps one day in the not too far off future we’ll buy a house in the downtown area, but for now, while Little S is young, the condo lifestyle is right for us.
MAKING IT ALL WORK
As my husband and I both work away from home fulltime, it doesn’t leave us much time for household cleaning. For that we have hired a cleaning person. It really helps us to stay on top of the cleanliness of our house and leaves us more free time on weekends to spend with Little S.
In between her visits we tidy and clean as needed. That is why I love to have my favourite household cleaning products on hand like Lysol Disinfecting Wipes, Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner and of course the Lysol Fabric Mist. I use these products for keeping our home germ-free and smelling fresh.
For now life is pretty peaceful and easily manageable. With the help of Lysol products that keep us happy, healthy and with money left in the bank, things will stay that way…for now?!

Don’t worry, it would only be natural to have those moments of longing for a backyard!
hehe. But yes, you’re not missing out when it comes to leaves and upkeep. I love our backyard for the kids and that makes it ALL worth it, but there are times I’m like “Didn’t cut the lawn already? More weeds? Seriously?” haha.

Thanks for the reassurance Brandi! I agree that seeing your kids enjoy the space would make it worth it. Just like everything else that is hard work or costs money, when the kids love it, so do you!

I couldn’t live without a backyard. I love being able to play out there with the kids

It’s funny, we don’t have kids…yet…but we hardly spend anytime outside, and even our low maintenance yard is a pain in the butt! haha Just watering everything takes 1 hour, and we don’t do it often enough. We’re moving to a condo and I can’t wait for the zero-maintenance lifestyle, especially once we do have kids!!
As for cleaning products, I use some of the Lysol brand products as well, but I also really like the “Scrub Free” Bathroom cleaner for the shower, etc. http://www.churchdwight.ca/brand.php?brandidx=scrubfree§ion=faq
I also really like Greenworks as well, especially since it’s safer for the environment! http://www.greenworkscleaners.com/
We probably don’t spend enough time on cleaning, and probably should just hire a housekeeper bi-weekly to save us that time, but just this past weekend we had family coming to visit and wanted to do a complete clean of our house. We cleaned both bathrooms fully, dusted and everything, and vacuumed & scrubbed the floors, etc. etc. and in total, it took us both 2 hours combined. So, as daunting as it often seems, we were able to clean our entire house thoroughly in 2 hours, so I guess that’s not so bad really, just have to get at it and do it!

Thanks for the comments and links Lindsay! I think once you have your kids and return to work, you’ll find that hiring a cleaner is the MANDATORY!

Love my backyard! Celaning while 2 of you are working can be difficult, most of my friends hire a cleaner frankly

I think that if you can afford it, it’s one of the best ways to spend your money! Who wants to work all week then spend a good chunk of your time off cleaning??

I am missing my backyard… but this winter I will not missing shoveling and my husband is not missing cutting the grass.

Shoveling, while excellent excersise, is perhaps the chore I am most happy to have left behind when trading in our house for the condo!

I’m a yard guy myself but that’s most likely due to the fact that I have always had a big yard. I will agree that the yard work is exhausting and I don’t get nearly as much enjoyment out of it as some people do. I spice it up by getting my kids to help out with their toy lawnmowers and gardening tools, lol.

So cute. Anytime you can include the kids it achieves so much more!

My lysol wipes are home savers! I wouldn’t go without them. As for the backyard, we have a small yard and larger home. Works for us. Just enough yard to relax in but not enough to drown us weekends full of grass cutting and raking.

Oh that sounds like the perfect combination to me Katrina!!
Brandy @insanemamacita
We love our backyard but yes, there is lots of up keep. Thank goodness I married a man who can not only cook for me, but also has a diploma in horticulture (although his major was turf management, greenskeeper at golf course). hehe! So, he takes care of the yard.

Ya you totally got yourself a catch! I want to see pics of your yard. It must be pristine!
Marianne
We have a backyard, a pretty good sized one for the city of London and I love it. Sure there is “upkeep” but it’s fun. Yesterday I pulled out the peas that are done, and planted a new row. I watered out new trees, I pulled a few weeds while talking to the neighbour while the kids played together. Heck — my 7 or 8 year old neighbours daughter came over and pulled a few carrots for me (and then ate them). Other then Christmas lights – which I despise putting up/taking down – everything outside is pretty enjoyable.

That sounds lovely Marianne! I enjoy my gardening too (growing carrots right now myself) so I can so appreciate that enjoyment you get out of those ‘backyard’ type activities. Thanks for sharing!

Sometimes I long for the life YOU have!
We have 750 acres of land, and a whole lot of work to be done on the farm all the time. Between work, child, farm, and other obligations and responsibilities, keeping the house spotless is a challenge!

That sounds amazing but it also took my breath away a little when you wrote 750 acres! Yikes!
Christine
Oooops! Didn’t quite finish that last comment!!! I see how busy your life is, but I would sooooooooo love to live the city life again. Sometimes I dream of an urban, high-rise lifestyle again!

I guess it goes with that whole ‘The grass is always greener’ (no pun intended) saying…obviously there are benefits to both lifestyles! I could so see myself being a country girl too!
Deanna T. (@MapleLeafMommy)
I love my house but DETEST my backyard. If we could afford it I would pay someone to take care of the darn thing. So your talk of the condo lifestyle… I find it quite enticing. Sigh.

I would love to be able to combine this lifestyle but also have a backyard! But I too would want to hire someone to take care of it
