Beat Breakfast Boredom: Deluxe Breakfast Yogurt

So we’re just days away from back-to-school and this means that our old routines will be back on track and the dog-days-of-summer will be behind us. This also means that we have to focus on school lunches and hearty breakfasts to start the day on the right foot.

If cereal, toast and other breakfast staples have got you in a breakfast-slump over the summer holidays rest assured there is help! Here is a fun way to make the most important meal of the day exciting again.

Deluxe Breakfast Yogurt is a fun way to make sure you and your children get a nutrient-packed breakfast and to provide the much-needed energy for the new back-to-school routine.

What I love about this meal is that it is easy to customize based on your family’s favourites. By storing and providing the ingredients in easily accessible jars, it also enables (age dependent) your kids to get their own breakfasts. It might even entice them to get excited about serving their own meal!

  • Glass food storage jars: I like the ones as shown in the picture because the snap open mechanism is much easier for kids to open than have to screw and unscrew lids.
  • Chalkboard stickers & chalk: you could also use another type of reusable label but ensure that you can erase the text so you’re able to switch up the contents easily.
  • Your favourite toppings: more on this below.
  • Your favourite yogurt:  oatmeal also works well in place of yogurt.

Pretty much anything goes in terms of what you want to include in your jars as toppings for your yogurt but look for items that pack the most nutrients possible while remaining tasty for your kids.

I used:

  • Dried cranberries
  • Dried cherries
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Dried apricots
  • Unsweetened coconut
  • High protein granola
  • Chia seeds
  • Pecans

Other options include goji berries, dried blueberries, dark chocolate chips, cinnamon, almonds, and sunflower seeds and of course the list goes on and on. It all depends on what is going to work for your family.

Cut the chalkboard sticker into the shape and size you wish for each jar. After you have filled your jars, write their contents with chalk on the labels. It’s important that you fill your jars first as once the titles are written in chalk, they rub off easily.

Add ½ cup of your favourite yogurt to your breakfast bowl, open up your jars of goodies and get scooping. I like to finish the dish off with a few ribbons of honey to add some healthy sweetness to the dish!

Consider storing your jars in an easily accessible place that the whole family can reach as well as have it in the line of sight so that when the breakfast requests are being made, this easy and healthy dish is at the forefront of their minds!

What are your favourite breakfast dishes? What do you do with your family to beat mealtime blues?
