Teach your children pro-social skills with Faraway Woods

Have you heard of the free podcast series Faraway Woods? If not, you are in for a treat…we love Faraway Woods in our house:

ABOUT FARAWAY WOODS

Bitsy-Spider

Faraway Woods is a free podcast produced by CLIMB Theater; an interactive podcast for early childhood (ages 4-9) that teaches pro-social skills.

How is this achieved? The Faraway Woods program has two parts: the first is a series of free, interactive audio dramas in the form of podcasts. The second part includes free, follow-up activities that teachers and parents can do with their children after they’ve listened to the podcast.

Faraway Woods comes from the imagination of playwright and CLIMB Theater Artistic Director, Peg Wetli affectionately known as “Peggly”. Through unique characters, important social skills such as empathy, are demonstrated throughout the stories.

WHY WE LOVE FARAWAY WOODS

Faraway Woods Podcast

When I first learned of Faraway Woods, I was intrigued, but I wasn’t sure what Little S would think as she had never listened to a podcast before. Together we snuggled up to listen to the first episode and immediately we were hooked, we even acted along with a flashlight shadow puppets. It provided an awesome bonding experience.

We were pleasantly surprised to discover that not only were the stories enjoyable to listen to, they were also interactive; Mrs. Meriwinkle, a motherly wallaby, asks her listeners to join in with some physical activity like hopping, jumping and acting along with her instructions.

We also love the way the stories encourage children to use their imaginations; with vivid descriptions of the characters, kids can create images in their minds of what each personality looks like and how they interact with the other creatures. This is something that watching movies or TV just doesn’t provide.

LISTEN TO FARAWAY WOODS

The greatest part is that Faraway Woods is available at no cost, though if you really love the experience, you can donate to CLIMB Theater to ensure the stories live on. Visit iTunes or Stitcher to access these wonderful tales and be sure to let us know what you think.
