Eco-Conscious Parties With Greenmunch

Greenmunch

With dinnerware made from fallen leaves, cutlery made of biodegradable wood and reusable, stainless steel straws; Greenmunch, a Canadian-based company, is a one-stop-shop for eco-conscious party planners!

Last week I blogged about our Witches’ Ball themed party and many of the items pictured came from Greenmunch. I really wanted to incorporate as many eco-friendly aspects as possible into the party and the products I ordered from greenmunch.ca helped me to do just that!

Paper straws are all the rage and they’re not only trendy but easy on the environment too. This is good news because traditional plastic straws really suck (pun intended)!

They are usually made of plastic that takes years and years to break down. Plastic straws make up most of the litter on our shorelines and of all the trash to end up in our waters, straws are at the top of the list!

It’s time to say goodbye to plastic straws forever!

MASON JAR BEVERAGES

Mason jar beverages are also on-trend now. I started using mason jars in place of plastic or paper cups for entertaining a few months ago; like paper straws, they’re much more friendly to the environment as they are made sans plastic and even better, they’re reusable.

Not only does Greenmunch carry Mason jars and other glass bottles for drinking, they also carry a variety of lids to enhance the use of canning jars as beverage holders.

greenmunch_lids

  1. Cuppow Lids:  snap on to most-size jars and create a smaller opening for drinking which makes them great for travel.
  2. Daisy Mason Jar Lids: are what I used for our Witch’s Brew. They’re perfect for keeping a lid on it and the Greenmunch paper straws fit snugly in the centre hole.
  3. Plastisol Lids: regular Mason jar lids but in a variety of colours; perfect for hot fill product sealing or food in a jar gifts. Think bright red for Christmas!
  4. reCap Lid: made with BPA-free recyclable plastic, the reCAP lid can easily be used to shake, pour and store right from your mason jar. It also makes a great spout for spill free drinking.
  5. Mason Jar Tumbler Lid: create a spill free drink with this lid with room for a straw!

Our Witch’s Brew looked great with the Dixie lids and paper straws and the best part is, we really saved some of the trash that would normally end up in the landfill.

MORE PARTY SUPPLIES

Greenmunch offers many more party supply items like garlands, paper pompoms, napkins and more. We also made use of the paper napkins in Vichy Black, the Divine Twine and the Aspenware Wooden Cutlery. We were really impressed with the quality of all the products.

DOING OUR PART

When you think about children’s birthday parties alone and think of each cup, plate, straw, napkin and cutlery used for each guest and multiply that by all the kids in the world having birthday parties, and well, it becomes unimaginable how much landfill waste is created from just this one activity.

So next time you are entertaining whether it be for your child’s party, a Christmas party or whatever, consider using eco-friendly, easy on the environment products like the ones from Greenmunch!

Greenmunch products are not only eco-friendly, but budget-friendly too. And with orders over $99 (which is reasonable for a decent party) shipping in Canada and the US is free!

Caring for the Earth and your kids one sip at a time { New Brita Kids’ Bottle}

Little S takes a water bottle with her wherever she goes. I should say that I send a water bottle with her wherever she goes. I remember being a kid (before water was sold by the bottle) and feeling like I was dying of thirst while I was on-the-go with my parents. I always had to wait until I got home and sometimes that took forever.

I always fill up her stainless steel water bottle with filtered water before we leave home. I’m not into buying bottled water unless we absolutely have to. I feel sort of guilty adding to all the waste so reusable bottles are right for us.

The only problem with this is that when we have to fill it up, it’s often not with filtered water. That is why I am super stoked about sharing today’s post with you!

It takes an estimated three litres of water to produce one litre of bottled water. –filterforgood.ca

COMING SOON TO A STORE NEAR YOU

Lucky for us we got to try out a Brita® Kids’ Bottle before they hit stores. From its cute design (pink with butterflies had Little S really excited) to its water filtering capabilities, this reusable water bottle is a hit with both kids and parents.

The child-sized addition to the Brita® Bottle line, the Brita® Kids’ Bottle is a squeezable, reusable bottle that filters water as you drink it, making it convenient for your little ones to enjoy great-tasting tap water at school, camp and wherever.

The new Brita® Kids’ Bottle will be available at mass merchandise stores across Canada in August 2012.

Worldwide, an estimated 2.4 million metric tonnes of plastic are used to bottle water each year. – filterforgood.ca

SOME FUN Brita® FACTS

Did you know that one Brita® water filter can replace up to 300 plastic water bottles? And if that alone doesn’t having you feeling good about this reusable bottle here’s more about the Brita® Kids’ Bottle:

  • BPA free and recyclable
  • One filter can last for 2 months (that’s 393 servings)
  • One pack of two filters costs only $7.99 CAD (that’s less than $2 a month)
  • Dishwasher safe on the top rack
  • Reduces chlorine taste and odour from tap water
  • Made with soft side wall for little hands to squeeze
  • The suggested retail price is $8.99 for one bottle with filter

Are You Going My Way?

How do you get to work each day? How do your children get to school? What mode of transportation do you use for going to the gym, grocery shopping or out for dinner?

Wednesday’s Waste Reduction tip is intended to get you thinking about the choices you make each day when it comes to getting from ‘A’ to ‘B’ and I am challenging you to make one alternative arrangement this week.

Here are some alternate transportation options:

  1. Carpool (Travel with a friend or coworker who lives in your neighbourhood)
  2. Run/Walk/Ride Your Bike (Are you close enough to your destination that you could feasibly choose one of these options?)
  3. Take Public Transportation
  4. Cut your driving down (Park further away from work and walk a little extra – every bit counts)

Consider one of these option to reduce carbon emissions this week and don’t forget to enter your activity for a chance to win a 3M Filtrate Furnace Filter: http://wp.me/pYin4-4H
