Fabulous Female Friday – Kelly Maher

Fabulous Female Friday

Fabulous Female Friday

Today I’m so excited to be featuring February’s first FF, Kelly Maher from FM96 and the Tucker & Taz show.

It seems like not that long ago that I was sharing the hallways of Regina Mundi with Kelly. We went to high school together and in the last year I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Kelly again from time to time as we work in the same building. And just as in high school, Kelly always has the biggest smile on her face. Her smile is one that is contagious (you see what I mean in the picture below!) as is her laugh.  If you’re not already smiling you will be after chatting with Kelly. She’s a bright and energetic woman.

I admire Kelly’s dedication, motivation and desire to pursue her life goals. As you’ll read below Kelly has been persistent in achieving success and listening to her true self.

Please join me in getting to know Kelly better.

Kelly Maher from FM 96

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a true Londoner…born and raised. I am engaged to a really great guy named Daniel and we have a 7-year-old daughter named Alyssa. My first baby was my cat Sylla, She is 14 now and we hope she’s up for another 14!

Just over a year ago I landed a job with the Tucker and Taz show on FM96. It is truly a dream come true for me.

When did you become interested in radio and broadcasting?

Growing up I was always fascinated by the broadcasting industry so when I was in grade 13, I left Regina Mundi and went to Beal for the broadcasting program. It was there that I fell in love with radio and learned the basics of the business.

Can you share the story of your first on-air job?

I applied for the Radio Broadcasting College program right out of high school and I didn’t get accepted. I lost my drive and passion to be in the industry for a while after that and I just felt like it was such a hard business to break into. I ended up going to school to become a Dental Assistant.

It wasn’t until I was 26 that I decided to whole heartedly go after my dream of being a radio personality. I saw an ad for an on-air announcer job at the Bowling Music Network (Radio for Bowling Alleys across North America).
I sent them a resume; never heard anything back. Then I saw the job posted again a few months later so I tried again and got an interview. I ended up getting the job and worked there for 4 years.

“I couldn’t ask for better guys to work with!”

What’s it like working with Tucker & Taz? You’re a female who has to handle two crazy men!

I couldn’t ask for better guys to work with! Yes, they’re crazy but that’s why I love it…it’s never boring with them around. It doesn’t matter how tired I may be, they always make me laugh. Taz is just a riot 24/7 and Tucker just has that naturally funny demeanour and is never at a loss for words. The truth is that they are 2 of the nicest people I know.

How do you balance the busy life of a radio personality and a mom?

The key to my sanity is napping. I get up at 3:30 a.m. so in order for me to function as a Mom, I need to nap for about an hour every afternoon. Also Daniel has been extremely supportive and sometimes he has to be Mr. Mom.

What’s your favourite thing about being a mom?

My favourite thing about being a mom is the unconditional love that I have for my daughter. She makes everything in my life have meaning and because of her I strive to be a better person every day. I also like being a mom because I have an excuse to play in the doll house and sing Hannah Montana karaoke every once in a while.

What’s your next goal?

My next goal is sort of work in progress. I have only been doing this job for a year so I am still trying to become an integral part of the morning show. I’d also like to do more work within the community. I would like to get out to more events and support some great causes.

“There’s never a crowd on that extra mile!”

What advice would you give to women in regards to pursuing their dreams?

If you are chasing a dream, say YES to all opportunities that will help you move in the direction you want to go even if it just seems like a small move.

Take the crappy jobs that no one else will do, even if the pay sucks.

Persistence. Persistence. Persistence.

Anything is possible if you believe in yourself. If a door is opened for you, kick it down; work harder than you think you ever could. There’s never a crowd on that extra mile!

What’s the last song you listened to on your iPod?

I just got the New Rihanna album “Loud”, been listening to that lately.

What’s the last book you read?

I seriously need to get back into reading! Wow, the last book I read was about 3 years ago. Eat, Pray, Love.
